A 59-year-old Silverthorne, Colorado man died from injuries sustained by an estimated 1/2 ton boulder that feel on him Tuesday, June 23, according to the Chaffee County Sheriff’s Office.
Around 1:40 p.m. the Chaffee County Sheriff’s Office Communication Center received a call about an incident that happened near the Arkansas River along CR 377, approximately 10-11 miles north of Buena Vista, Colorado.
According to the caller, his co-worker was walking a trail and dislodged rocks that fell on him causing serious injuries, the sheriff’s office said in a post on Facebook on Wednesday, June 24.
Chaffee County Sheriff’s Office Deputies and Detectives responded to the scene to investigate and render aid, the sheriff’s office said.
When first responders arrived, they learned that two men working for a moving company were passing through the area after completing a delivery.
The two men had stopped at the “Rapid 5 ½ Pullover,” a popular camping area and location the two men have visited several times to have lunch at while driving through.
Paul Frasch, from Silverthorne, Colorado apparently dislodged rocks along the trail attempting to walk back up the trail and was crushed.
Investigators on scene estimated an “at least ½ ton” boulder was still on top of Frasch when they arrived and Frasch did not survive his injuries. The reporting party and co-worker received minor injuries to his arms in his attempt to help Frasch.
The Chaffee County Coroner’s Office took possession of Frasch at the scene and next of kin was notified. The Chaffee County Sheriff’s Office will continue to investigate the incident.
