New concept map expands trail system at Green Mountain in Lakewood

City of Lakewood opens Public Survey #2, asks for public input on the comprehensive plan at the popular mountain park

A new concept map regarding the next phase of the proposed Green Mountain Comprehensive Plan was released by the Colorado Mountain Bike Association (COMBA) in an email on Thursday, April 16, showing several possible additions to the popular mountain park in Lakewood.

However, not only are new mountain bike trails included in the proposal. Additional length to the Base Loop Trail has been proposed along with multiple reroutes throughout the trail system and an ADA accessible trail on the northeast side of the park.

COMBA said the concept plan includes a hiker bypass section, which helps improve the experience for all trail users, and was encouraged by some mountain bike trail additions too.

“We’re excited to see the potential for four designated bike-only downhill trails in the latest version,” COMBA said in an email. “These updates mark a meaningful step forward as the proposed plan continues to evolve and reflect the strong, constructive input from the MTB community during the initial survey and open house.”

William F. Hayden Park located on Green Mountain is the second largest park in Lakewood at 2,400 acres, which includes 38 miles of existing trails (24 miles maintained, 14 miles social trails).

The City of Lakewood has opened up the William F. Hayden Public Survey #2 asking the general public their input on how the City can determine how to best serve current and future park users while preserving the park’s natural resources.

The City of Lakewood said plan improvements are not currently funded and that the William F. Hayden Park Plan is intended as a guiding document for park improvements for the next 10-20 years.

The City also said the plan has received multiple revisions following community touch points over the last year.

“(The City) wants to ensure it provides an appropriate balance between conservation and recreation,” the City of Lakewood said. “The next step in the planning effort is developing the William F. Hayden Park Draft Plan. The draft plan will be shared on the project page for community input this summer.”
